Unmanned aircraft systems (UAV), is also referred to a drone. A drone is an aircraft that does not have a human pilot on board. These drones are usually controlled by a pilot on the ground or by another computer. These UAVs come in all shapes and sizes. Drones were first developed for military and special operation purposes but since they are now cheaper they are starting to become more common and now being used for other purposes. The U.S and Israel have become the world’s biggest manufacturers on creating drones. Drones have been used for multiple reasons; police, government agencies, movies, commercially, etc. They are being used for missions or tasks that are too dangerous for a human. The top 12 companies that are using drones are Boeing, General Atomics, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, AeroVironment, Prox Dynamics AS, Denel Dynamics, SAIC, Isreali Aerospace Industries, Textron, General Dynamics and DJI. These companies are defense contractors, spying agencies, filmmakers (taking aerial shots), etc. (Berman, 2013) Drones have been around for quite some time, one of the first recorded uses of drones was by the Austrians onĀ August 22, 1849. They launched 200 pilotless balloons with bombs attached at Venice. In 1898, during the Spanish-American War, the U.S. military placed a camera on a kite, creating aerial photos.

There is a growing interest in U.S. military for drones and they have has spent about $3 billion on drone programs. The U.S. government is looking to also use drones for law enforcement agencies, universities and border patrols. Drone companies such as DJI are manufacturing the devices for filmmakers to take aerial photos. In 2015, it is expected by the Federal Aviation Administration to approve drones for commercial use to fly freely in the sky. (Berman, 2013)

Drones are related to artificial intelligence. Drones will soon be able to perform their tasks without being controlled by a human. They will be able to work and make decisions on their own. (Helton, 2013) Although, the use of drones is creating much of a controversy; killing so many innocent civilians, invading privacy, and could fall in the wrong hands and become misused. (Whittle, 2012)
